Been too long since I have updated our info. here. Going to try and get back into the habit of making more regular updates.

Tools For Life
We are in our second rotation of the the TFL class. This week the students are reading pages 84-89 in their textbooks and answering questions on page 64 of the workbooks. This assignment deals with the lubrication system in the automobile.
Prior to this the students have studied chapters on; Buying an Automobile, Automobile Expenses, Fluid Level Check, Electrical System and the Lubrication System.

Auto 1
This week we are collecting, discussing and grading questions from pages BR 35, 38, 43, 49 and 50. Students should also read pages BR 53-58. Prior to this chapter (which is studying the brake system) the students have studied chapters on; The Automotive Industry, Automotive Safety Practices, Automotive Tools & Equipment.

Auto II
Book work for this week is read pages 111-120 and answer questions 1-10 and 1-5 on page 120. This chapter deals with Lifting Equipment and Air Compressors. Prior to this chapter students in Auto II have studied; Introduction to the Automobile, Locating Service Information and Specifications, Measuring Tools and Systems, Hardware Fasteners Drills and Thread Repair,Shop Tools, General Shop Equipment, Cleaning Equipment and Methods.

Student's have been working on our Model T hot rod for a number of years. It began as a drafting project in Jr. High (student drew the frame as a drafting project) and later student's in Auto 1 and Auto 2 have done a ton of welding, fabrication, assembly, etc.
Took the car to a traditional car show (pre-'65 cars) in Big Horn Wyo. this August and am proud to report the car won 1st Place in the "incomplete project" class! Many there were very impressed by the quality of the work our students produced. Can't say enough about how proud I am of them and of how proud they should be of themselves. Great Job!

Monday we collected the engine models that the students were assigned the first day of class.
We continued our discussion of Chapter 2.
Tuesday the 9th we will collect the questions from Chapter 2.
Wed., Thur., and Friday we will read Chapter 3 in the textbook and complete pages 21, 23 and 24 in the workbook. Skip pages 22 and 25. In addition, question #1 on page 24 should read "piston pin" rather than "piston ring".

Updates from the shop!

Here are some of the things the students have been up to in the shop lately:
With the weather changing from cold to warm motorcycles have taken the place of snowmobiles in the shop. Projects include a stroker 110, a '70 Honda enduro and a re-assemble of a freshly painted dirt bike.
Students are still completing a number of impressive fabrication projects. Grill guards are a very popular and useful project. Our '40 chevy pickup is also receiving a hitch.
A number of engines are in the process of getting rebuilt, new cranks, etc. We have everything from full on rebuilds to minor "freshening up" jobs being performed.
The project to remove and replace the engine in a suburban is nearing completion. Another student is fixing questionable vacuum hoses on his Toyota pickup.
For our long term projects the '40 chevy pickup is getting wired, the headers are pretty much done for the '27, the '52 chevy pickup is struggling with some vacuum leaks and the '53 chevy sedan is getting an open rearend in preparation for a T5 swap. The '72 Nova is getting some body work and its engine is about ready to go back in.
In all, we have projects in the shop ranging from the 1920's to the current decade. Rebuilding, repairing, refinishing, fabricating the kids' are busy and doing great!

Testing week of March 1

This week we will be completing our required MONT-CAS tests. Only the sophmores are required to take these. Sophmores will arrive at school at normal time and test until lunch. All other students will report to school after lunch for a modified class schedule.

We have the fortunate problem of having more students in Auto I than we have text books so 6th period Auto I has been assigned a different book. On Monday students watched a video and answered questions about motor oil. The rest of the week will be spent in the shop.

Hope everyone had a good break! Here is what is happening the week of 1/4 to 1/8:

Tools for Life-

Auto I-
Read EP33-53 and complete questions on pages 46, 51, 53 and 54. This chapter deals with sensors and actuators.

Auto II-
Most in class are at a lull right now on personal projects and so as a result we are getting some work done on shop projects. We are combining our '39 and '40 parts to create one pickup out of the two.
Work has resumed on building headers for the T and we are also in the process of getting the steering mounted and figured out.
With our recent rash of winter weather, the students have had a fairly constant supply of snowmobiles making there way through the shop as well!

Pictured is an under floor master cylinder mount we made for our '40 chevy pickup project. This will allow us to use a much safer dual master cylinder rather than the original single unit.

The students have also been busy with projects like: getting there vehicles ready for the cold weather, building grille guards, painting a tool box for a pickup, rebuilding a trailer axle for the woodshop, installing a leveling kit on a pickup, installing the rebuilt head on our '52 chevy pickup project...in other words, not much down time here :) !

Auto I week of 12/7

Students read and answered questions on pages EP7, 15 and 16. This chapter deals with piston engine basics.
Students were then assigned to read EP19-29 and answer questions on pages EP24, 26 and 29. These questions will be collected and discussed Monday 12/14.
Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th will be work days in the shop.
Monday 12/14 or Tuesday 12/15 students will be given a take home test over the chapters on piston engine basics and diagnosis. They can use their books to answer these questions. They will be collected Wed. 12/16.
Thursday the 17th and Friday the 18th will be spent working in the shop.

New section of TFL begins 12/7

A new section of Tools For Life started Monday 12/7. The students should have read pages HB3-HB15. Questions on pages HB8, 15 and 16 have been collected and grades will be posted.
This first chapter discusses the various ways to get involved in the automotive industry as a career. We also discussed some very basic automotive history and touched briefly on the different automotive systems.
The week of 12/14 we will be reading pages HB19-31 and doing the questions on pages 23, 26, 31 and 32.
This chapter deals with safety in the auto shop.

Monday 11/2 marks the start of a new rotation of the TFL class.
This week we will read pages ER-3 through ER-15. After reading the students will complete the questions on pages ER-7, 15 and 16. These questions will be due Friday 11/6.
The students are studying basic engine operation (the 4 stroke cycle, for example) in this chapter.

Auto II update-

Work continues in the shop. Wednesday 10/28 we will discuss the questions we answered over the 4th ignition system video. Some work being done in the shop includes:
-replacing bent pushrods in a '52 Chevy pickup
-replacing a bad fuel pump in '73 Honda Civic
-cleaning and painting parts for a dropped axle front end
-preparing a Corvair steering box to be reversed for our Model T, as well as building a bracket to mount it
-fabricating a flat bed
-dissassembling a 350 in preparation to go to the machine shop
-deburring a 350 in preparation for Glyptol and paint
All this among lots of other activity!

Auto I update-

The class continues to study and discuss the chapter on disc brakes. We are currently in the process of fabricating brackets so we can update MII 9 1/2" brakes to 11" brakes. I am hashing out the fine details of this swap and then will hopefully turn the students loose on it.
We will also continue to finish the rebuild of the drum brakes on our dropped axle front end.

Tuesday 10/27 the class ventured into the shop and as part of our study of basic engine construction we dissassembled a 350 chevy. We identified components as they were removed and noticed some pretty substantial damage.
Wednesday we discussed the questions from page ER-15.
The questions from page ER-16 were assigned and will be due on Thursday 10/29.

Grades for both classes have been updated as of Friday 10/23, they can be viewed on Power School.
Be sure to check with the teacher about making up any missing work!

If you are missing work you wont be able to work in the shop until all your book work is done.

Auto 1 spends 3 days a week in the classroom and 2 in the shop.
Auto 2 spends almost all their time in the shop, with occasional assignments to hand in. Shop grades are based on 3 criteria; on task, following directions and cleaning up. Grades are earned by performing these 3 tasks.

Auto 2 viewed a video today on distributorless ignition systems. The questions they answered over the video will be discussed in class Monday. The next series of videos they will view will focus on the fuel system.

Using a vacuum gauge

Carla's '52 Chevy pickup was not running right. We hooked up a vacuum gauge to diagnose the problem. The reading on the gauge indicated a problem with the valves. Remove the valve cover and find that 3 pushrods have been bent! We suspect that because the pickup has been sitting idle for so long the gas has turned to varnish causing a couple of the valves to become stuck in the the valve guides, thus bending the pushrods.
A vacuum gauge is an incredibly useful tool that can be used to diagnose anything from this old '52 chevy pickup to a 2010 Camaro. Here is a cool website that explains how to use a vacuum gauge, it also includes some very useful animations

TFL update-

So far this week the students have begun a new chapter discussing internal combustion engines. Much emphasis is being placed on the 4-stroke cycle; intake, compression, power and exhaust.
Remember that questions ER 7, 15 and 16 are due Friday 10/23!

On Friday 10/23 the TFL class took what they have been learing about engine construction to the shop and worked to replace some pushrods in our 216 Chevy 6 cylinder engine.

Mustang transplant...

Nate has already done quite a bit of work getting his old Mustang running. Current plans call for pulling the 6 cylinder and replacing it with the 351 seen in the photo. In addition, Nate has begun powdercoating the suspension pieces he will need to convert the car to 5 lug.

Friday we will watch the 4th video in the Engine Performance Series - Distributorless igniton systems. We will take a pre-test and post-test as always. That is the plan providing that the VCR doesnt eat the tape! :)

Fabrication

In addition to the normal auto shop projects our students also do a fair amount of fabrication as well. We have an incredible welding and drafting program here so many of our students come in with exceptional design and fab. skills. Fabricators, engineers, designers, etc. are needed just as the mechanics and technicians are.
In this picture Cade and Troy ponder the finer points of Cades' grill guard. In our part of the world a grill guard can mean the difference between being able to drive home or totalling your vehicle if you were to hit a deer or cow...

Auto II tackles "no run" problem

Chris and Tyler diagnosing why this '86 Buick 3.8l will not run. They determined it has spark and compression so there next test led them to discover it did not have fuel (no fuel pressure at least). Next on the agenda was to test the fuel pressure regulator which seemed okay so now they are going to attack the fuel pump.

Here Colter and Dusty are working on one of the headers for the T project. This project has been pretty difficult getting all the angle and mitres correct but I think we have this side close. Other side should go quicker!

Our T hot rod project...

One project we have in the shop has been in the works for a number of years. Years ago I bought a '26-7 Ford roadster body. To turn it into a project that the students could work on I assigned a number of my Jr. High Tech. students the task of drafting up a set of plans for a frame. The students drew some plans and we even mocked the body up on the frame. Fast forward a number of years and we started working on the project again. This time around a number of Auto II students build a number of brackets and did a substantial amount of welding on the frame. This part of the project gave us a great chance to talk about things like suspension and drive line angles. A few of the students took on the daunting task of repairing some of the body work, they did a great job of bringing back some sheetmetal that could have easily been discarded.
Our next major step will be rebuilding the Ford Y-Block engine we have for the project. This portion of the project would not be possible without the awesome genorosity from the fine folks at http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/Forum3-1.aspx The members of this website have donated a large amount of parts to make the project a reality. As soon as a couple of students are needing a project we will begin the job of reassembling the engine. I would like to have this car running and driving for our Bucking Horse Sale Parade this spring, I think it would be cool for the kids to drive their creation in the parade, we'll see!

Tube Mitering

A number of students in Auto 2 have projects that require them to miter tubing or pipe. One project is a grill guard and the other is a set of lakes style headers for our Model T. We searched on the 'net and found a couple of sites that offer programs that help you lay out the proper miter angle. We havent tried it yet on the headers but a couple of students have tried it out on the grill guard. Here is the link if you have some fabrication projects to tackle...

How to read a micrometer-

Every class; TFL, Auto 1 and Auto 2 could require that you know how to read a micrometer. Micrometer measurements are accurate to the thousandth of an inch. Once you understand how to use the tool its pretty cool and kind of fun. Here is a neat link that can help you practice with the micrometer. Enjoy!
